ABSTRACT

The chapter explores the debates concerning: how does the use of mobile technology change the nature of learning in the classroom? what are the different implementation approaches to consider when contemplating a deployment of tablets? how is the implementation of tablet technology to be managed? The use of mobile devices and tablet technology is becoming ubiquitous and, for better or worse, becoming wedded to modern life, whereby communicating, connecting and collaboration are all changing. When learners are bringing their own technology, there is likely to be some diversity. Some may bring tablet technology, others may bring computers but for many this will mean using their smartphone. The implementation of tablets in a secondary school is a major investment, possibly with the same parity as a new school building. It can be agreed that the largest spend of implementing a tablet solution is at the beginning, whilst equipment and infrastructure are purchased and staff undergo initial training.
