ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the notion that learning spaces should be considered as a whole and the designs should be overseen by educators whether the space is physical or virtual, and whether intended for social collaboration or independent discovery. The complementary learning experiences may build on social, conversational processes, as well as a personal knowledge-creation process, through the creation of large, unbounded personal learning networks that may incorporate formal and informal social media. The chapter discusses incremental changes that learning in virtual spaces is making to the pedagogy of the classroom. It investigates what teachers need to consider to ensure that their learners have an exciting, productive and safe learning experience in both virtual and physical spaces. In the schools that are applying flipped learning, pupils watch videos on digital devices at home – sometimes they undertake a quiz to check their understanding.
