ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of language programmes which are currently available in the UK. Spoken and written language build the foundation for human communication. There is an increasing knowledge base about how to support children's language development and what intervention strategies work best. The intervention programme aims to teach children four basic listening rules: to sit still; to stay quiet and allow everyone to listen; to listen to all of the words the person who is talking is saying, and to look at the person who is talking. The chapter presents an examples of intervention programmes with a focus on listening comprehension. It concludes with a comment on advances in technology in relation to language programmes. Pragmatic skills include the ability to understand the social functions of language. There is research evidence that some medication can reduce repetitive and challenging behaviour such as aggression, hyperactivity and self-injury.
