ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an overview of the framework governing chemical transportation. Transported by sea in bulk or in packaged form chemicals are necessary to modern life and represent an increasing volume of global trade. The United Nations Globally Harmonized System (GHS) of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals, constitutes an internationally-harmonised approach to classification and labelling designed for the global trade of chemicals. GESAMP a high profile advisory body to the United Nations established in 1969 and tasked to provide scientific advice on marine pollution. GESAMP has published The Revised GESAMP Hazard Evaluation Procedure for Chemical Substances Carried by Ships; 30 this document revises the first edition dating to 2002. Furthermore, the Revised GESAMP Hazard Evaluation Procedure for Chemical Substances Carried by Ships also takes into account the GHS. In principle, Annex II applies to all ships certified to carry Noxious liquid substance in bulk.
