ABSTRACT

Introduction Population aging refers to an increase in the relative portion of older people as a share of the total population in a given region. The world population is aging and will continue growing older, even at an accelerated pace, over the coming decades. As “clearly one of the most signicant demographic trends of the twenty-rst century” (United Nations 2012a, p. 3), global aging – population aging worldwide – stands out as a key demographic environmental factor aecting the lives of citizens around the world, those in later life in particular, throughout the twenty-rst century (Uhlenberg 2009).
