ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the extent of use of ICT in schools; what the research has to say about its impact, not least on pupil motivation; the teaching of computer science; the use of ICT for school management and improvement; and possible future scenarios. In the course of the discussion a number of specific programmes and technologies are referred to, with relevant research findings where they are available. There is a widespread - and justifiable - belief that Information and Communication Technology (ICT) should be playing a big part in the classroom. Moving to a more ICT-intensive world is far from simple; it will require a great deal of learning by teachers, a great deal of organisation by schools and potentially changes in national procedures. The school may be designed from scratch to be far more inclusive of ICT in the classroom and at home, with school management, assessment, self-assessment, learner feedback, and communication with parents all systematically handled online.
