ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the evidence about teaching, looking at different methods of assessing teachers and various practices associated with teaching, such as formative assessment, personalised learning, setting and streaming, and the management of classroom behaviour. It then examines initial teacher training, including recruitment and the role of teachers' pay and incentives; continuing professional development; and the role of teachers' engagement with research. Teachers should - but may not - acquire much of what they need to know during their initial teacher training (ITT). And effective classroom behaviour management does not rest with the individual teacher alone. Schools need to recognise and analyse their behavioural issues and take active and pre-emptive steps to limit disruption. Future Leaders is a recent programme for teachers to enhance their management and leadership skills, and eventually assume headships in disadvantaged schools; it aims to bring better school experiences to pupils in these schools.
