ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the reader to the nascent field of collective virtue epistemology. It begins by laying out what the major questions in the field and discusses some methodological issues that arise in the investigation of group epistemic virtues. It seeks to the survey of the handful of contributions to this field. The chapter explores the contributions to collective virtue epistemology and considers some methodological issues that arise in the study of the epistemic virtues of collectives. Collective epistemic virtue ascriptions can only be analyzed in light of the conclusions arrived at in collective psychology and epistemology. The applied branch of individual virtue epistemology focuses on the practical question of how to make individuals virtuous. The nascent field of collective virtue epistemology can benefit from several lines of research. The chapter concludes with some suggestions for future work on collective epistemic virtues.
