ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides the first foundational primer on visual criminology and offers a state-of-the art guide for those new to this emerging field. It presents a companion for seasoned researchers – highlighting theoretical currents and central controversies, while also presenting a rich diversity of approaches to gathering, analysing and using visual material. The book also presents cutting-edge research as well as long established practices. By exemplifying both the best and the latest methods and techniques and identifying emerging trends and new directions, it enlarges understanding of the role of images and the visual in criminology in diverse ways.
