ABSTRACT

This chapter suggests that whichever object is chosen, it varies greatly, and what is really behind this variation cannot be handled within neuroscience. The frame of neuroscience versus the humanities sets the stage, the real fights are revealed to be within neuroscience, and between neuro, and other sciences, including computer science, economics, psychology, sociology, education, marketing and so on. Neuroscience is most often imported as a means not to think any further, rather than as an actual provocation to put at risk the theories one started with. Across the research field, the consensus was that relative to the new specialty drugs in cancer and diabetes, "neuroscience an expensive and risky prospect for industry". Neuroscience as a research field was therefore instrumentalized and hamstrung by industry, a cautionary tale for every research field to be sure.
