ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that traditional practices were appropriate management theories and practices in Africa that could still be promoted for sustainable development, though Western management knowledge and practices were essential elements in modernization of Africa. It explains three African management practices that would greatly influence the current management theories and discusses the possible ways to integrate them into organization management in Africa. An effective management theory requires a firm foundation in the society it serves in order for it to be practical. Organizations in Africa have been made to copy everything from the West: ideas, concepts, and institutional designs, without considering that these are from highly developed countries. Issues of cultural conflict are paramount and are always at the center of an organization's struggles. There is a need to integrate African and Western management theories in order to come up with a culturally feasible management theory for organizations based in Africa.
