ABSTRACT

Talking about gentrification focuses attention on neighborhood change: an influx of new, usually wealthier, often younger, often Whiter residents, the appearance of new shops that cater to them, and the displacement of those who have lived there before. Sometimes gentrification evokes quaint and bounded change in a single place. When gentrification seems to be everywhere, some call it supergentrification. But does the typical idea of gentrification distract us from what’s really going on?
