ABSTRACT

Examples rework established oppositions between the general and the particular and allow for new creative and imaginative relationships between them. This chapter describes how, as a method, exemplifying expands the now of knowability, paying attention to how the concrete facilitates a particular mode of knowing. It has its own way of validating in which both that which needs to be validated and the criteria against which the validating needs to take place hang in the balance. It is this destabilization of dichotomies and openness to the unexpected that puts forward the example as exemplary for interdisciplinarity.
