ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the analytic literature that explored in any detail the use of prostitutes by men outside of the theoretical framework of perversion and addiction. It argues another psychic function of the prostitute in the minds of some men seeking her/his services, the way the prostitute may provide an opportunity for working towards an integration of psychosexuality. One of the strengths of an analytic approach is that, aims to understand behavior and the unconscious states of mind that give rise to the behavior without categorizing it and making generalizations. The early deficit in the representation of the body could be said to have compromised the development of a phallic sexual self as a necessary step towards the integration of oedipal sexuality. This phallic self-first required the actual mirroring provided by the prostitute allowing the body representation to become consolidated in their minds before these men could work through their oedipal sexuality in the transference.
