ABSTRACT

This chapter explores some of the economies and ethics involved in the creation of new commons. It also aims to question the ethical economies of giving and taking in an emerging commons in a study of local food project, Incredible Edible, Todmorden (United Kingdom) UK, in 2011. Commons is a term one hears with increasing frequency. The commons, and gifts, bring certain responsibilities and 'contracts' in the dynamics of giving and receiving. The chapter focuses particularly at aspects of gifts and gift economies involved in theses commons. As political economist Massimo De Angelis says, there are always necessary commons for capitalism to continue, but at the same time capitalism demands enclosures. Incredible Edible is a grassroots initiative in Todmorden, Calderdale, whose overall, long-term ambition is for the town to be self-sufficient in producing their own food. Incredible Edible emphasise providing opportunities for businesses and social enterprise.
