ABSTRACT

This chapter summarizes emerging themes from the handbook contributors. It is divided into different phases of the lifespan beginning with career development programs and services targeted primarily for adults and moving down the age categories to young children. The chapter proposes a theory of change that links career development programs to the promotion of positive youth and adult development; and development of a national strategy similar to the ELGPN that is able to encourage innovation and efficiently disseminate promising and proven career development practices. Whiston et al. argues that there are currently two evidence-based strategies for designing career development programs and services. The first are a range of ingredients identified by Brown and Ryan Krane that are associated with improving career choice decision-making. The second evidence-based strategy is the JOBS program, which uses group exercises to support development of job search self-efficacy and resiliency to manage future unemployment setbacks.
