ABSTRACT

The retina is unique in the body in that it provides a literal window into the circulatory and central nervous system, in addition to affording information about eye health. This chapter introduces the most common retinal diseases and disorders, as well as provides imaging approaches to these diseases. While the retina is very easy to image, understanding how different diseases behave under different imaging modalities is key to providing the best possible care. The chapter provides a foundation for imaging approaches that can be adapted to any situation and disease process. The regimented structure of the retina makes it easier, in some ways, to identify disease, simply because any changes, vascular or otherwise, manifest as visually recognizable signs and symptoms, sometimes before vision changes occur in the patient. In other words, the retina pretty readily broadcasts its difficulties, which is one of the reasons imaging the retina is such an effective tool.
