ABSTRACT

In our initial communications about this book, Dr. Gartner conveyed that his vision was to have specialists on psychological trauma address their perspectives on treatment, not from the distance of a professional, academic, or empirical vantage point, but from the immediacy of first-hand experience. He wanted to have therapists share their personal reactions to working with traumatized clients and traumatic material. I was excited about the prospect of being able to discuss the complexities of working with traumatized clients in a personal way. Doing therapy has always felt like a calling to me, and working with trauma survivors in therapy has become a facet of that calling to which I have grown especially dedicated. It seemed to me that I had something relevant to contribute that would fit into the general rubric Dr. Gartner had proposed.
