ABSTRACT

Teachers and trauma is a coupling most of us would view as improbable. Indeed, as a therapist who has treated many New York City employees for over 25 years, I would have thought that teachers as a group were no more likely to experience work-related trauma than any other group; in fact, I assumed that some groups, such as policemen and firemen, would encounter more trauma-producing events. For a long time this was the case, although, because of the differences in culture, fewer policemen and firefighters sought treatment outside of that provided within their departments.
