ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a historical background on policing leading towards crime analysis. This foundation will help understanding concepts and the direction of crime analysis currently. Following this, example task assignments are provided to walk students through the thought process analysts could use on the job. This is supported with two research briefs provided by a crime analyst working for St. Louis County Police Department. The insight in the briefs will link many of the concepts and discussion of the first two chapters to real-world application. Following these are additional crime analyst questionnaires to provide students with a peek at different types of analytical careers and the type of backgrounds the analysts have related to their position.
