ABSTRACT
Environmental criminology is the backbone of crime analysis. The developments in this line of research have allowed us to understand the larger environmental influence, beyond individual level factors. This chapter touches on early forms of theoretical underpinnings that guided theories and perspectives we still utilize today. These theories provide context to why place matters and how place can influence crime. After this discussion, a brief section of recent works and additional criminological theories is provided
