ABSTRACT

Are the concurrent increases in reported mass incidents and the apparent qualitative worsening of corruption connected? More specically, has the worsening of corruption led to increased unrest? Are China’s workers, farmers, and members of the new middle class reacting to an increasingly venal and predatory regime whose ocials and functionaries have usurped their ocial authority and converted their public oces into private money-making machines? More critically, is corruption linked to violent protests and, if so, what kinds of violent protests?
