ABSTRACT
This chapter explores the nature and scope of fanzines in broad terms: the sheer numbers and diversity of titles make it impossible to provide anything but a general introduction. Examples of specific titles tend to draw on popular music, an indication of the focus of most research into fanzines. (This is not to deny the great deal of attention paid to other fan communities, for example in science fiction; there is, however, relatively little work on fanzines in those communities.)
