ABSTRACT

There are many implementation tools available in the area of urban planning and land use. Urban or city planning is the process of looking ahead to the future of the city and trying to create ways to coordinate all its different components. These different parts include a city's land and its various uses, transportation, housing, economy and jobs, natural resources and parks, community resources and facilities, and cultural components. A comprehensive plan brings together these pieces and a city's people, places, and plans. This chapter provides an overview of major concepts in the field of planning, beginning with the history and where the planning function is located within city government. It also provides a discussion of zoning, subdivision planning, and current issues in planning, like growth management and transit-oriented developments. Urban planning is a topic covered under NASPAA's Urban Administration guidance to students on what they should learn about urban service delivery.
