ABSTRACT

Gujarat is the land of Mahatma Gandhi, who formed his ashram on the banks of the River Sabarmati in Ahmedabad city and from where he proclaimed and lived his message of satyagraha (the struggle for truth) and ahimsa (nonviolence).1 Gandhi’s ashram was a sacred place where he spent hours with his followers in prayer and meditation, in deliberations, and in discernment as the calm waters of the River Sabarmati flowed past. Listening to the flow of the River Sabarmati, Gandhi spoke these famous words: “The earth, the air, the land and the water are not an inheritance from our forefathers but on loan from our children. So we have to handover to them at least as it was handed over to us” (Kaushik, 2010).
