ABSTRACT

In the post-1902 period all these professional bodies found it necessary to campaign vigorously, not only in terms of raising the status of teachers, but also on the salaries front. As already noted, in the early part of the century teacher's organizations could basically be divided into the National Union of Teachers. In the early part of the century teachers' organizations could basically be divided into the National Union of Teachers, which looked after the elementary school interests. There are some who argue that the National Confederation of Parent-Teacher Associations (NCPTA) would do better to drop its reference to teachers and that it should confine itself to representing parents only, but the link between parents and teachers is crucial. It has long campaigned for an effective voice for governors in the education system, and it is particularly active in the field of training governors. The subject associations are professional associations which make a significant educational input in their specialist spheres.
