ABSTRACT

The concept of primary education originated with the Hadow Report in 1926. Within a few years, two consultative committees under the chairmanship of Sir Henry Hadow produced reports on primary schools, 1931 and nursery schools, 1933. Currently the maintained school system of education consists of two stages primary from five to eleven years, and secondary from eleven to sixteen years. The major task of the Her Majesty's Inspectorate (HMI) is to report to the Secretary of State on the education being provided and to offer advice on corrective measures which may be needed. The performance of children as well as staff is a critical concern of management in the primary school. It requires careful monitoring and documentation. Better development of pupil profiles by all primary schools is envisaged. Standards of performance for the primary school pupil derive from the school's objectives.
