ABSTRACT

The central curriculum of the sixth-form college is academic, its characteristic feature being a wide range of General Certificate of Education (GCE) and General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) work. So far the full range of vocational courses has been denied sixth-form colleges by examination board and validating body regulations. Local agreements confine certain courses to existing further education (FE) colleges. Tertiary colleges bring sixth-form and further education provision under one roof rather than presenting them as competing alternatives in separate institutions. The full-time academic and vocational courses for the 16-19 age group exist alongside provision for trainees on day or block release from employment. The full-time academic and vocational courses for the 16-19 age group exist alongside provision for trainees on day or block release from employment, those following evening recreational and vocational courses, and school pupils on Technical and Vocational Education (TVE) link schemes.
