ABSTRACT

The further education sector in England and Wales has, until recently, been commonly defined as comprising all forms of post-school education except the universities. It has normally been sub-divided into advanced further education (AFE) and non-advanced further education (NAFE). AFE, or public sector higher education as it has been commonly called, is mainly concentrated in two types of institution polytechnics and colleges or institutes of higher education. This chapter will be concerned with examining the organization and management of a typical college of further education, maintained by a local authority. Further education colleges have always seen as their prime function the training of skilled personnel to meet the needs of the national economy. As already stated, the most powerful and authoritative person in the further education colleges has been, and still largely remains, the principal. As people have seen, a significant part of the growing complexity of the further education colleges has been due to the introduction of new programmes.
