ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of keyconcepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. As the individual authors have brought to their own topics differing theoretical perspectives. The section is divided into two parts. The first looks at learning and teaching in general at different stages of education and from different perspectives. This set of chapters is intended to provide concepts and ideas derived from the most recent research, which may help people to see how to improve the efficiency and the quality of the education process. The second part takes a more practical path by considering the particular nature of learning in selected subject areas and looking at ways in which teaching can be made to facilitate learning in those areas. This section of the Handbook brings them into the classroom to consider the learning environment provided for students and the way aspects of that environment influence the quality of the learning which takes place within it.
