ABSTRACT

Open Learning (OL) is a term used to describe courses flexibly designed to meet individual requirements. It is often applied to provision which tries to remove barriers that prevent attendances at more traditional courses. It also suggests a learner-centred philosophy. OL focuses on the needs of individuals and allows both self-pacing and a choice of sequence. The range of OL schemes includes learning by appointment, flexistudy, resource-based learning, supported self-study, distance learning. Also, correspondence courses, study circles, directed private study and independent study contracts. Some allows the learner to choose when and where to study but gives no choice of content or sequence. The subjects available for study by OL are increasing and include zookeeping, hazardous cargoes, adult literacy, hairdressing, garage management, and quarrying. Much of the input and content of OL courses usually comes via study materials. They are usually based on print but frequently include other media: video, audio, computer programs, slides, practical kits.
