ABSTRACT

One view of the development of children in home and school environments stresses the discontinuities between development at home and development in school. Rather, such development builds on what the child brings to the school environment from previous learning and development in the home environment. Later in the chapter these continuities between home and school will be illustrated. The development that occurs in school therefore extends and builds on developments that have taken place at home before the child enters formal schooling. Nevertheless, it is to such difficult cases that educational administrators and policy makers need to devote attention if children's development at school is to be achieved. Children whose development in school proceeds well and who enjoy educational success are those who encounter good educational programmes, who are expected to succeed in school. Who receive good parental support. If children are to be helped to negotiate the transition between home and school environments successfully.
