ABSTRACT

Salvador City is located in the north-eastern region of Brazil (see Figure 13.1) at latitude 12° 52ʹ south and longitude 38° 22ʹ west on a peninsula that narrows the entrance of the bay – Baía Todos-os-Santos. The city’s hilly site, with altitudes varying from sea level to about 100m, is surrounded by the sea on two sides: the Atlantic Ocean on the east coast and the bay on the west. The municipal territory is composed of two geographically distinct spaces – the continent, which comprises about 279km² and corresponds to approximately 90 per cent of the area, and the bay’s islands which together amount to around 30km² (SEDHAM, 2009).
