ABSTRACT

Sudeuropa underscores the interdependence of seemingly unrelated mobilities such as undocumented migration, tourism and journalism, and opens up a space to explore the issue of hospitality in relation to the dynamics of mobility and stillness. As this chapter will demonstrate, Sudeuropa is situated at the intersection of documentary, essay film, and screen-based art, and thus has the ability to move from one category to another without ever being completely contained. Cuomo and Iorio's recent projects have focused on the intricate relations between southern Europe and Maghreb and the issue of undocumented migration. It explores the overlaps and disjunctures between tourism and migration and unpacks the production of hospitality relative to different guests arriving in Lampedusa. Notably, Iorio and Cuomo's investigation of the relationship between tourism and undocumented migration does not contrast images of well-off white tourists enjoying the beautiful island with scenes of black migrants or refugees who are on the verge of death following their perilous journeys.
