ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews Armenia's policies regarding energy, security and Europeanization, particularly the background of Armenia's security framework and the structure of energy supply that affect country's relations with neighbours and cooperation with the European Union (EU). Armenia needs to make difficult steps to attempt restoring trust in relations with the EU and to adopt an open and pro-active attitude towards foreign policy, so the threat to be used as a tool of Russian policy could be reduced. While the perspective of success of the Eurasian Economic Union is too vague it is hard to believe that Russia will start behaving in a constructive way in the near future. As Armenia's potential in the energy field is discussed, the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant (ANPP) issue is important. ANPP was the first nuclear power plant in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics constructed in a region of high seismic activity, and that caused significant changes in design and construction of reactor facility.
