ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the foreign policy priorities of Azerbaijan, while explaining its different postures with regard to the balanced foreign policy approach. Azerbaijan's foreign policy has for some time been both a source of a debate and an inspiration to the overall discourse regarding the country's future. For Azerbaijan, the principle of territorial integrity in the Armenia – Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is crucial and non-negotiable. According to the National Security Concept of the Republic of Azerbaijan, integration into European and Euro-Atlantic institutions is one of the main directions of national security policy of the Republic of Azerbaijan. North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) cooperation has become one of the cornerstones in the NATO's Afghanistan operations, for which Azerbaijan has served as a key logistical location. Azerbaijan has complicated and multilayer geopolitical identity, based on geographic, historical, religious and cultural elements.
