ABSTRACT

This chapter chronicles the emergence of the social and solidarity economy (SSE) framework and maps the rise of a global solidarity economy movement, from its purported origins in Europe and Latin America to the creation and consolidation of an intercontinental network for the SSE. It outlines the counter-hegemonic implications of the movement and provides a description of the various tactics the movement has used to make solidarity economy practices visible and to foster connections among them. The movement draws its energy not from revolutionary theory or a utopian vision of a classless society; rather, it roots itself pragmatically in the proliferating number of economic experiments already occurring worldwide. The chapter includes a discussion of conceptual, geographic, and economic mapping strategies, as well as a discussion of more qualitative studies involving the narration of particular case studies.
