ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with how badges are currently impacting existing practices in higher education, and then explores how badges might intersect and begin to merge with other trends in education, specifically learning at scale and big data. As these three trends mature, it is inevitable that we will see them begin to influence one another. Badges are starting to slowly make an appearance in some MOOCs, and the sheer volume of data produced in environments like this will begin to allow badge data to be used for the purposes of learning analytics and adaptive learning.
