ABSTRACT

The credentials that have historically been used to document and certify a person’s competency such as transcripts, certificates, and diplomas lack the flexibility and granularity needed to accurately reflect the accomplishments of contemporary learners. One alternative credential system is digital badges. Assigning value to digital badges is an important part of acceptance and use of this new credentialing system. How digital badges are valued has a lot to do with the particular stakeholder who is making the valuation. This chapter explores the different perspectives stakeholders have regarding badges, juxtaposed with several of the salient purposes for using digital badges.
