ABSTRACT

If the afterschool movement is to prosper, programs must be recognized as important places of learning. Awarding digital badges represents an excellent strategy to accomplish this. This chapter offers two case studies detailing the use of badges by pioneering afterschool institutions. Key challenges that emerged stem from the fact that badges are a new concept for the afterschool community. To address this, we must reinforce the value and use of badges to recipients. Additionally, leaders in the field must work together to align our collective work with badges for afterschool, raise awareness of badges, and connect with other badge initiatives.
