ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines a case study at Pacific Science Center in Seattle, Washington. The authors, along with a team of designers, constructed a digital badge system for a youth development program aimed at supporting students’ college and career readiness. The project included interviews, focus groups, and usability tests with youth participants and program leaders. Each group shared their attitudes towards badges and offered feedback about the system. Participants responded well to the ownership and personalization of education that badges can afford, but offered skepticism when asked to imagine the practicalities of implementation and large-scale adoption of badges.
