ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the use of digital badges in an innovative transdisciplinary competency-based program. Badges were designed to reflect mastery of competencies normally found in engineering, technology, and humanities courses. The transdisciplinary curriculum and focus on mastery supported active engagement and synthesis of topics within and outside of course requirements, resulting in deeper learning. Students particularly enjoyed the ability to explore topics of their own interest while developing diverse skills reflected through badges. However, concerns were raised about the novelty of the model, potential lack of alignment with traditional degree programs, and perception of non-traditional transcripts by employers.
