ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a digital badge initiative for undergraduate composition courses at Coastal Carolina University. In its inaugural semester, the program, Coastal Composition Commons (CCC), was implemented by 63 different instructors and graduate assistants who taught 122 sections of English 101 and 102 courses, which enrolled more than 2,300 undergraduate students, resulting in over 17,000 badge submissions. The CCC assesses composition skills using a flexible design that promotes instructional consistency. This case study details how the digital badge initiative has changed the landscape of the first-year composition program by serving as a fourth credit hour.
