ABSTRACT

The remembrance of the D-Day landings and war heritage tourism today in Normandy is owing in large part to the vision and leadership of Le Comité du Débarquement, translated here as the D-Day Commemoration Committee, and the legislation that ensures the long-term commitment to these efforts. This chapter presents an historical account of two organizations, D-Day Commemoration Committee and Normandie Mémoire, that have been responsible for the commemoration of the D-Day landings and the Battle of Normandy, overseeing the evolution of remembrance tourism by way of the establishment and maintenance of museums and memorials in Normandy along with organizing the annual D-Day commemorations. The broader political context of French war memory is also discussed to situate the significance of Normandy in the French war memory narrative before refocusing on the regional efforts to fund, memorialize and commemorate D-Day and the Battle of Normandy.
