ABSTRACT

France was the scene of the two major world conflicts in modern history, and as a result of these combats which profoundly marked the nation, there exists in France today a rich heritage of twentieth-century war remembrance. Immediately following the First World War, the pilgrimages of men and women who had fought or lost a loved one at these sites led to a custom of remembrance tourism. Almost a hundred years have elapsed since the conflicts of the Great War and, although no living witnesses remain today, their impact on society remains extremely powerful. This observation is even more significant with regard to the more recent Second World War, of which the major events are often recalled through a wide range of media (films, television series, documentaries, historical works, novels, photographs, paintings, websites, etc.).
