ABSTRACT

Introduction: our background In the 1970s we unknowingly pioneered a new avenue in the tourism industry, battlefield tours. In 1977 we developed the first publically available battlefield tours to Normandy. Modern battlefield tours have evolved from military training via pilgrimage and remembrance, to special interest and general tourism, and are considered to be significant contributors to local economies. This chapter will examine Normandy and the development of battlefield tours, from the perspective of our own personal journey and of our company, Major and Mrs Holt’s Battlefield Tours, based out of the United Kingdom, which eventually covered battlefields around the world.
