ABSTRACT

The world has entered an age of the Arctic. The acceleration of the ice melt in theArctic Ocean, strongly linked to climate change, has set alarm bells ringing. With evidence pointing to an ice-free Arctic, the situation is being described as a ‘runaway train’. The melting of the ice has led to serious scientific investigations on the longterm implications of the meltdown, particularly the connection with the major oceanic and atmospheric currents as well as the calculations over the breaking up of the Greenland ice shelves and the rise of sea levels.
