ABSTRACT

Medical tourism (MT) has existed since at least the nineteenth century in the form of people travelling to places such as spas and springs for healing and relaxation purposes (Hunter, 2007). According to Connell (2006), MT refers to people travelling overseas for the enhancement or restoration of their health while simultaneously spending time for vacation in the destination. While the main purpose of travel is to seek medical services, Hall (2013) stated that there is an interest among people from developed countries to undertake medical travel in combination with visiting tourist attractions. This phenomenon creates a niche market for medical and tourism industries to offer a combination of services to medical tourists (Hunter, 2007).
