ABSTRACT

MS: Perhaps we should consider Wonder an endangered, or at least an overspecialized species of experience. It needs the proper conditions to survive. It will thrive on unfamiliar moments, revelations, mysterious objects, things out of place, inexplicable states. It must have protected spaces, and also less competition from the gratifying, purposeful and repetitive ‘wonder-market’ that reroutes our capacity for Wonder into the spectacle. Equally, it needs to be believed in and too much scrutiny might hasten its demise even quicker than a hundred theme parks could.
