ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a critical teacher educator and an undergraduate student reflect together on how using narrative and poetry enabled them both to engage with issues of diversity and equity. The course, and use of poetry and narrative therein, are discussed as an example of critical practice in higher education. Vanessa, wrote for an undergraduate course assignment. One will explain the context of the poem shortly, but Vanessa wrote it as part of a course completed in the final year of her teaching degree that was taught by the first author, Katie. Vanessa is a Tongan New Zealander who grew up in Auckland, in a working-class family. Katie is a Pakeha New Zealander who grew up in a working-class rural family. Katie has spent much of her career, both as a high school teacher and as an academic, working with culturally and linguistically diverse students.
